TEA, TENERIFE ESPACIO DE LAS ARTES, HERZOG & DE MEURON

In development since 1999, Herzog & de Meuron’s Tenerife Arts Space (TEA) has officially opened in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in June 2008. Sited on the banks of the Barranco de Santos, a local river, the building is diagonally traversed by a public walkway connecting the town’s two levels. The walkway broadens into a triangular plaza that forms the public hub of the building and is accessible on all sides.
The building is a long volume intersected by a ramp that generates a triangular plaza. Along the facade, over 1,200 openings in 720 different shapes filter the natural light to the inside, while generating an amazing view during night.
The 21,000 square metre complex is made up of two floors which are connected to the main entrance by a winding staircase and houses an institute of contemporary art named after local artist Oscar Dominguez, a photography centre and public library. The concrete exterior has small bubbled, glass-filled openings creating random patterns, while triangular folding planes are seen through the interior.
The perforations were created using a complex formwork system. Here, surfaces with incorporated decorative motifs – a recurrent theme in Herzog & de Meuron’s work – result in a new kind of sensuality which bears out the idea that architecture is also a form of poetic expression. (...)

MIXED-USE BLOCK PROVIDES HORSE, CAR AND HUMAN HOUSING IN CENTRAL MANHATTAN

Located at the western edge of Midtown Manhattan, the Clinton Park mixed-use development, currently in the first stages of construction, will occupy more than half of a city block with 1.3 million sq ft of commercial and residential programs.
Designed by Enrique Norten and Ten Arquitectos, the building fills a void in the urban fabric by integrating multiple commercial uses at the base and providing 900 housing units in the 27 floors above. The base building will include a 50,000 sq-ft auto showroom fronting 11th Avenue with 250,000 sq ft of service floors below grade, a 30,000 sq-ft horse stable for the NYPD Mounted Police, a 7,500 square-foot neighborhood market, a 30,000 square-foot health club, and 200 parking spaces.
The overall massing of the project slopes up and away from Clinton Park, starting at 96 feet along 11th Avenue and climbing up to 348 feet at the middle of the residential block; this height transition negotiates two very dissimilar urban scales: the flat, horizontal one of the park located to the west of 11th Avenue and the vertical, windowless structure of the telephone switching tower to the east of the site. BUILDING FOR BOUWKUNDE COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED

On 14 March 2009 the jury announced the winners of the international open ideas competition ‘Building for Bouwkunde‘. The ideas of the winners and honorable mentions, along with the findings of the TU Delft Think Tank which looked at the future of the faculty and TU Delft campus, lay inspiring foundations for creating concrete plans for the new TU Delft faculty of the future. The winners received the prizes during an award ceremony at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) in Rotterdam. All entries of the competition and the results of the Think Tank are part of an exhibition in the NAi. The exhibition can be visited from 15 March until 7 June 2009. DIEZ ARQUITECTOS PARA REINVENTAR PARÍS

Imaginen un Central Park a dos pasos de un barrio marginal donde los parisinos puedan ir a pasear, las grandes arterias de la capital francesa transformadas en 'bulevares verdes' y un tren de gran velocidad atravesando los suburbios. Son algunas de las ideas presentadas ayer a representantes del Estado por diez estudios de arquitectos, por encargo de Nicolás Sarkozy, para, entre todos, concebir un 'Gran París', más ecológico y preparado para la convivencia.
La iniciativa está considerada como la más ambiciosa tras la revolución promovida por el Barón Haussmann a mediados del siglo XIX, momento en el que se proyectaron las principales avenidas de la ciudad, incluidos los Campo Elíseos. Tres arquitectos galardonados con el Premio Prizker -considerado el Nóbel de la Arquitectura- han aportado sus propuestas: el británico Richard Rogers, y los 'nacionales' Jean Nouvel y Christian de Portzamparc. Hay ocasiones en las que uno se olvida de todo lo que exprime su mente y recobra el hilo de lo realmente importante en una vida. Situaciones en las que una exclamación sale de nuestros labios a la vez que los ojos parecen salir de sus órbitas como a niños ante una sorpresa o un deseo cumplido. Descubrir la escala humana en el estudio de Frank Ll. Wright en Oak Park, encontrar el mueble justo para ese rincón de tu casa, llorar ante una película de la que no esperabas nada más que dos horas de imágenes y música sin diálogos loables,... tantas y tantas situaciones ante las que cada uno siente de nuevo esa alegría que te da cuerda. Para mí, la música es uno de esos motores que mueve mi mundo y, el descubrir una melodía nueva, una nueva canción que despierte estos sentimientos aletargados, olvidados y coartados por el día a día me llena de felicidad. Si, además, esta melodía genera un recuerdo .agradable. de las víctimas de una situación como la vivida aquel Jueves, mayor es el motivo.

Gracias Eduardo por hacerme feliz en una tarde cualquiera.
